And so it begins...
My story so far...
For the past 40 years I have been employed by somebody, somewhere from Legal firms, a couple of Farmers/Huntsmen , a Barrister, a firm of Insurance brokers, The Disney store, a local Shopkeeper, Pub Landlord, and latterly a Human Resources Publication. You can throw in a couple of husbands too(one ex, one present) who started up a Car Design and a Vintage Aircraft Restoration Company of which I have been Company Secretary and Directors of both.
In 2003 I moved with my family to Arizona, USA which was an amazing experience but visa restrictions did not allow me to work at all.
When I returned in 2008, I took a few part-time positions and then I was offered 2 days a week as an Administrator for a well respected HR publication. This role quickly turned into working 3 days a week and then I was thrown into the deep end one day of stepping into the position of Office Manager which turned into 4 days' work. I soon also took on the roles of Editorial and Advertising Support which when coupled with me being Subscriptions Manager and also ensuring that all the company invoices were issued together with all the credit control work that went with that, ultimately turned into 5 days' work. I adored this job but at the back of my mind I knew that I was also capable of doing more with the knowledge that I have accumulated over many years and making my life better. It was at this point I decided to take the leap into being self-employed.
A Sales person i am not!
So now I find myself in situations where I am totally out of my comfort zone - I have had to become a Sales Person - learning how to sell myself and my product, which I am now beginning to appreciate is really quite a useful service to many different types of people.
I have signed up to Networking Breakfasts where I have had to speak for 40 seconds (give or take a few seconds!) to a room full of strangers about what I can offer Small Businesses, Individuals and Consultants. Oddly enough I am finding that these strangers very quickly become friends and soon are looking out for you and recommending you to people.
Meet merlin...my mascot
Over the next few weeks I hope you will join me on my new journey. I have no idea where it will take me but I have a great feeling about it all. And best of all.... you get to meet Merlin - my mascot. Merlin will doubtless pop up a few times in my blog because he is my faithful pal who sits underneath my desk when I am working and who never ever doubts me (crazy little faithful fella).
